a poem to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11.

I heard their voices.
"Save me! Save me!"
Echoed from above.
Haunting... Sending chills down my spine.
And I realized
That I was one of those people too.

And as I ran
From the smoke and debris,
that choked my throat,
and found it's way into my lungs,
there was a tiny spark of hope
embedded inside.

And I remembered,
my wife and my children.
Who sat watching the news
on their tv screen,
hoping that daddy would be OK.

And the tears came
like waterfalls,
they tumbled down my cheek.
I stumbled and fell,
holding my hand to my chest.

And then I remembered,
the ring that tied my wife and i together,
I took it off my finger,
and placed it next to my heart.

And like a prayer,
that would never be heard,
I whispered,
"I love you, good-bye..."
And then there was a crack,
as the walls caved in and the ceiling broke.
And then,
silence.
